Basic information
LocationBohinj, Gorenjska
Type: lake
Entrance fee: no
Altitude: 527 m
Trip duration: 1 h
Difficulty:

Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia (Lake Cerknica beats it in size when it is full). It is of glacial-tectonic origins and has approximately 4 km in length and a good kilometer in width. On the west side a cold stream from Savica waterfall flows into it, and on the east side (under a bridge by the church of St. John) Jezernica river exits the lake.

It lies at the end of a closed valley, which is surrounded by steep wooded hills from three sides, and on the east it is 'guarded' by rocky mounds of Studor and Rudnica. The lake warms up during summer (June - September) and is excellent for bathing, kayaking and even wind surfing. Most popular bathing locations are in the west side (Ukanc) and mostly on the east side of the lake (near Stara Fužina and Ribčev Laz). On the south edge of the lake runs a road whereas on the north side there is only a footpath and slovenia self guided toursno other infrastructure. Here you will find small romantic bays...

The nature is beautiful no matter the season. The lake is surrounded by extensive forests in which marvelous waterfalls and gorges hide, and above them you can ascend past wonderful alpine meadows up to fantastic viewpoints and into the limestone embrace of Slovenia's highest summits.

Hikers, mountaineers, climbers, cyclists, paragliders, fishermen, horse-back riders, fans of water sports, cavers, skiers and cross-country skiers – Bohinj will not disappoint you!.

Tip: Bohinj is linked with Soča valley, which is also a paradise for 'outdoor junkies', by a railway tunnel.

The length of the trip mentioned in 'Basic Information' is symbolic. You will surely stay longer in Bohinj…
