Finally a nice Sunday on snow |
Hungry for snow we went to check the snow conditions above Pokljuka plateau, Slovenia. This time a bit differently: in the safe embrace of larch and spruce trees. The winter is in full swing and there's really a lot of snow in the mountains. We headed towards Viševnik from the parking lot at Rudno polje and skied down to Konjščica meadow. I've never skied down here before. It always feels good exploring new terrain. The line took us to a narrow valley which opened up again just above Konjščica meadow. Sun already did its job and skiing was not that fun on the south slopes. The mix of clouds, sun and wind provided great light and our compadre Bor took care of the sexy colour combination of his favourite garment producer :) On Konjščica we had a snack + tea pit stop and continued to the ridge on the southern side of Mt. Ablanca. A very rarely visited terrain.
The ridge offers amazing views and a true winter fairy tale. View on the peaks between Viševnik and Veliki Draški vrh. And the view back towards Bohinj. The slopes which haven't been touched by sun look amazing! Perfect skiing in dry snow! Everyone chooses their own line, glides down towards the forest and between the trees back to the meadow.
The amount of snow and the weather forecast promise a looooooong winter up here. I guess the cows will stay a few weeks longer down in Bohinj before attacking the mountain grass :) Author: Miha Gantar, February 15th, 2014 |
